First Tee – Greater Akron Celebrates 25th Anniversary at The Game Changers Dinner
Akron, OH – December 4, 2024 – First Tee – Greater Akron hosted its milestone 25th-anniversary celebration with The Game Changers Dinner at the DoubleTree Akron Fairlawn. The evening brought together community members, supporters, and distinguished guests for a memorable night of celebration, recognition, and inspiration.
The event featured guest speaker Coach Jim Tressel, who delivered an inspiring address highlighting the values of perseverance, leadership, and character—qualities that align with First Tee’s mission to empower young people through the game of golf.
As part of the evening’s festivities, several awards were presented to honor outstanding contributors to First Tee – Greater Akron and its mission:
25th-Anniversary Game Balls: Presented to Tom Knoll and Kevin Harris, co-founders of First Tee – Greater Akron, for their vision and dedication to launching the program, and to Don Plusquellic, whose instrumental role in the building of Mud Run and support for First Tee helped ensure its long-term presence in Akron.
Kaulig Companies Championship Award: This prestigious award honors an individual who exemplifies the values of golf and extends their care and impact beyond the course. Rosie Hickin was celebrated for her outstanding contributions, unwavering passion, and dedicated mentorship, as well as her commitment to furthering the mission of First Tee.
Roland Pennington Coach/Volunteer of the Year Award: In a heartfelt tribute, First Tee – Greater Akron announced that this award would be named in honor of long-time coach Roland Pennington, recognizing his remarkable legacy. Coach Roland had the privilege of presenting the inaugural award to Marty Yates, who was honored for his exceptional dedication, selfless service, and commitment to mentoring and inspiring youth participants.
Game Changer Awards: Ayreana Rippey and Emma Kesler were honored for their outstanding leadership, growth, and embodiment of the values taught at First Tee.
Moment of the Year Award: Jackson Young earned this accolade for his unforgettable hole-in-one, a moment that encapsulates the excitement and achievement that First Tee strives to inspire.
“The Game Changers Dinner was a true celebration of our journey over the past 25 years,” said Executive Director Jeff O’Brien. “We are incredibly proud of the individuals we recognized, who have contributed so much to the success and impact of First Tee – Greater Akron. Their dedication, passion, and achievements exemplify what it means to be a game changer.”
